How do you think of the idea of connecting trees to the cellular network?

Imagine, the trees in front of your house door are equipped with intelligent chips which can send the city administration real-time data on pollution, humidity or ozone. Or huge forest areas are monitored with smart sensors by the forester, who can read the data and determine which measures positively affect the local climate.

Those are not futuristic ideas, but precisely the scenarios that the our portfolio startup FoldAI’s digital solutions could achieve.

FoldAI develops intelligent sensor networks for forests and specifically targets foresters to enable sustainable and natural forest management. In context with the ecosystem decline, increasing forest fires, incompatibility of the economy and ecosystems, FoldAI would like to strengthen the critical importance of the forest and general ecosystems again through their solutions.

How?

Fold AI Natural Ecosystem Intelligence

In principle, the sensors will be directly anchored to the trees, and these sensors can then step by step understand their networks by using IoT and AI. Through the analysis of measured values like humidity, light and the quantification of metrics like biodiversity, tree growth, parasite etc., the foresters can thereby get to know the status of the forest. In a nutshell, FoldAI provides the information so that the foresters can, on the one hand, manage their areas efficiently and, on the other hand, maintain the complex ecosystem.

This solves the problem between modern economies and complex ecosystems.

What’s the role of 5G in this story?

First, the sensors should work in the long-term forest to record and transfer data over the years and even decades. We need energy-saving processors, sensors, and communication since communication is one of the most expensive elements. For a more efficient transfer, the narrowband technology comes into view, which is anchored in 5G and are also being further developed. NB-IoT and CatM enable the energy-saving sensors to integrate and embed seamlessly into the ecosystem.

On the other hand, from the network size perspective, there are suddenly hundreds of thousands or millions of sensors incorporating the data, which means that we give the foresters and other stakeholders who deal with the forest the opportunity to integrate this large amount of data and do it locally. And in this case, the higher bandwidth, small latencies, a large amount of data and intelligence in the network are something that 5G could offer and also what very attractive and exciting for FoldAI’s solutions.
